The classic Tequila Sunrise cocktail, with its bright bursts of colour, was designed to evoke a southern California summer sunrise. This classic cocktail has only three vital ingredients—tequila, grenadine and orange juice—and is served unstirred to preserve the colour of each layer.
The Tequila Sunrise was created in the 1970s at the Trident bar in Sausalito, California. The cocktail achieved fame after Mick Jagger and Keith Richards tasted it at a party to kick off The Rolling Stones’ 1972 tour in Vancouver. The band began ordering it at stops across Canada and the USA, and a tequila manufacturer, with an eye for a quick buck, dubbed the tour “Tequila Sunrise tour” which helped to give the drink popularity.
In 1973, after the success of the Rolling Stones tour, Jose Cuervo put the cocktail recipe on the back of tequila bottles, and that same year, the Eagles released “Tequila Sunrise” on their country rock “Desperado” album. These pop music associations brought the drink from southern California bars into mainstream culture.
Contrary to rumours the next Rolling Stones tour will not be called the “Milk Stout and Lemonade tour” or “A Nice Cup of Tea tour”.
Tequila Sunrise Vital Ingredients
120ml orange juice
1 cocktail cherry
1 orange segment
Pour the grenadine into the base of a tall glass and leave aside. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add the tequila and orange juice. Shake until the outside of the shaker feels a little cold.
Add a few ice cubes to the serving glass then carefully double strain the cocktail into it, trying to avoid disturbing the grenadine layer too much. Add more ice if needed to fill the glass then garnish with a cherry on a stick, orange segment or cocktail umbrella.
