Classic American Cocktails: The Screwdriver

The screwdriver is thought to have originally been a popular drink amongst Texas oil workers in the 1930s and 40s. These workers carried tools around with them, and if their vodka and orange juice was not fully mixed, they would stir it with a screwdriver.This cocktail, with two basic ingredients, brings the taste of sunshine and summer holidays to your garden party. Mix freshly squeezed orange juice with Russian or Polish vodka for a classic screwdriver cocktail.

Vital Ingredients

95ml/1.5 ounces Polish or Russian vodka
135ml/4.5 ounces Orange juice, freshly squeezed, to top up
Ice cubes


Add an orange segment or wedge


Fill a highball glass with ice cubes, then add the vodka.
Top with the orange juice.
