Classic Cuban Cocktails: The Mojito

Mix this classic Cuban cocktail for a garden party boost using fresh mint leaves, white Cuban rum, white sugar, zesty lime and sparkling soda water. Adjust the quantities to suit your taste.

Vital Ingredients

juice of a lime

1 tsp white granulated sugar

small handful mint leaves, plus extra sprig to garnish

60ml (2oz.) Cuban white rum

soda water, to taste



Stir the lime juice, white sugar and mint leaves in a small jug, crushing the mint leaves as you go – you can use the end of a wooden spoon for this. Pour into a highball glass and add a handful of ice.


Pour over the rum, stirring with a long spoon. Top up with soda water, garnish with mint sprig and serve.

Those locked down at home, searched Google for “Mojito”, “Mojito cocktails”, and other cocktails that you can easily make at home, and the number of such searches massively increased in the USA over the past year.

Out of the 50 American states, three states favored the Mojito above all other cocktails, and the Cuban cocktail made with lime juice and rum was found to be the most popular with stay at home drinkers in Arkansas, Virginia, and Washington, during the Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter months of the pandemic.
